Aircraft History

Owned and Flown by Flt Sgt Robin Braithwaite form the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine at RAF Henlow.

Built in July 1968 and registered F-BRAA, the aircraft you see is the very last CP301B Emeraude built by Russeau Aviation (Brittany).  It was imported into the United Kingdom in May 1972 and re-registered G-AZGY.  Designed by Claud Piel, the Emeraude is also known as the 'Working Lad's Spitfire' due to its semi-elliptical wing plan form.

The all wood and fabric aircraft has a well deserved reputation for being a delight to fly with very light and responsive controls.  Its development led to the very successful CAP10 aerobatic aircraft. Spitfire pilots that have flown the Emeraude claim that "Piel got it about right - aside from the missing 1,100 hp or so, it really does handle like a spitfire"! G-AZGY is powered with a 100hp Rolls Royce Continental O-200.

Emeraudes rarely come onto the market and those who are lucky enough to own one would describe them as a well kept secret!

G-AZGY is one of just three remaining 301Bs on the British register.
